A LARGE PAIR OF CONTINENTAL MEISSEN STYLE "AUGUSTUS REX" GILT AND POLYCHROME ENAMEL DECORATED PORCELAIN COVERED VASES, LATE 19TH CENTURY, of baluster form with medium blue ground, with tall straight sided domed covers fitted with later gilt metal finial and back plate, the covers decorated with four acanthus scroll gilt outlined reserves decorated with alternating panels of floral blossoms and fete champetre scenes, over gilt strapwork decorated flanged rim, the body similarly divided into four gilt outlined reserves with alternating floral and fete champetre scenes, underglaze blue crossed swords on underside of bases. Height: 20 3/4" Diameter: 11"

In overall poor to fair heavily restored condition, with visible cracking to bodies; uneven coloration on restored areas, together with crazing and flaking of surfaces; rubbing and loss to gilt decoration; finials and back plates later replacements for porcelain finials; bottoms restored and reglazed.
