1851 Supernatural Illusions GHOSTS Witchcraft Love Potions Occult Devil Begbie
Major P.I. Begbie’s ‘Supernatural Illusions’ is a curious, mid-19th-century book on all things occult – an incredibly vast array of subjects are covered in this work. According to an 1851 issue of the British magazine ‘The Spectator’,“the subjects of this work are numerous: werewolves, witchcraft, witches in various aspects, divining by the cup and the mirror, sortilegious nights (magic and sorcery), love-philtre (love potions), wishing or divining rods, hidden treasures, the mandragora (demons), natural objects perverted by superstitions…ghosts and apparitions.”However, the contents are even more extensive than that explained by ‘The Spectator’. There is an entire chapters dedicated to dream interpretation, the martyrdom of Saint Christopher, existence of land monsters, the use of oracles and mediums, and even predicting one’s own death!
Throughout this book, Begbie tells tales, whether true or not is unknown, of the Devil deceiving man and creating disasters of demon possession! A fascinating work!
