Description:
Copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outline, with uncolored pictorial cartouche. 48x58.5 cm (18¾x23").
De Vaugondy's 1775 revision of his 1750 map, with the English colonies now extending to the Mississippi River, and an inset at upper left showing a detailed, if flawed, depiction of the Northwest coast of North America. Wagner remarks that "Devoted to exploiting the fables of Admiral Fonte, Vaugondy still adhered to his ancient California type, chiefly that of Plancius. In the far north a few of the discoveries of Bering are found, but otherwise the map is like Delisle's of 1752, except that Vaugondy omitted the Mer de l'Ouest..." Pedley 448, state 4; Wagner NW Coast 638.
Condition
Some toning and light foxing, a crease, very good overall.
