Description
A large engraved map of the County of Devonwith original hand coloring. Made in three vertical sections by Christopher & Jon Greenwood with Greenwood, Pringle & Co. Proprietors. The map was made in the years1825 and 1826; published February 2nd, 1827. The left sheet with decorative title at upper left with a vignette view of Exeter Cathedral to lower portion. Maps are unjoined with dissected, linen-backed and edged ingreen fabric. Comes in pull-off top book form box. Each map measures approx. 76 3/8" height x 25 7/8" width (193.9cm x 65.7cm) or approx. 76 3/8" height x 77 5/8" width (193.9cm x 197.16cm) overall. Provenance:Former property of Captain William S. Seccombe. A captain of the Cunard Steamship Cephelonia. Just before the Spanish-American War he became captain of the Collier USS Arethusa, a Naval coal carrier. Afterapprox. 40 years of sea duty he retired in the 1909 and died in 1911.
