Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts is America's "First Rural Cemetery" In 1831 seventy two acres of woodlands were purchased not only to construct a cemetery, but also to establish an experimental garden. Edwin Booth, Charles Bulfinch, Dorethea Dix, Mary Baker Eddy, Fannie Farmer, Buckminster Fuller, Isabella Stuart Gardner, Charles Dana, Gibson, Charles Sumner, B.F. Skinner, Arthur Schlesinger Jr. are among the notables buried there.
From the dedication 1831speech: 'We shed our tears; but they are no longer the burning tears of agony. They relieve our drooping spirits. We return to the world, and we feel ourselves purer, and better, and wiser, from this communion with the dead.' Joseph Story (first president of Mt. Auburn and Professor of Law at Harvard.
