Description
Roman, later Imperial period, reign of Valentinian I, ca. 364 to 375 CE. Nicomedia Mint. Obverse: DN VALENTINI -  ANVS PF AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust to right. Reverse: RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE, Emperor standing facing, head to right holding labarum. Victory on globe. Upon becoming Emperor, Valentinian I made his brother co-Emperor. He gave his brother control of the eastern provinces while he retained control of the west. Valentinian set about fortifying and defending the borders against all invaders. History remembers Valentinian I as a good administrator and he is noteworthy for having persecuted neither pagans nor Arians. Sear 3988; RIC 2a(5) Hunter Cabinet 47. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm); 4.3 grams
