Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely hand carved from a creamy white marble in a realistic pose. The hand is depicted grasping a tightly-bound scroll with its four outer fingers and a slender stylus beneath its raised middle finger. The back of the hand is slightly rounded in a lifelike fashion, and the slender fingers suggest this was an individual of high intellect or wealth since thick, muscular fingers indicate being of the working class. The physiognomy of the hand is quite naturalistic as befits high-quality works of Roman stone-carving. Custom museum-quality display stand included. This is a fragment of a larger statue. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small chips to wrist line, fingers, scroll, and stylus, with fading to some details, and light roughness across most surfaces. Nice earthen deposits and light encrustations throughout.
