Majolica faience baptismal fountain, dated 1707.29 inches by 15 inches.Also known as a Holy Water Fountain, there is a Latin inscription: "Sperges Et Mundabor", meaning "Sprinkle Clean".The tradition in Italy of Baptismal fountains, or Holy Water Fountains, goes back to the Early Renaissance, when craftsman labored over the beauty and devotion of the fountains, that were often placed near or in Churches or structures of worship.One of the most famous artists of the period, Luca della Robbia(Born 1400), elevated the craft to a fine art, and his works of majolica and faience are considered to be important sculptures, part of the collections of major museums.
