Description
Egyptian Dancer. 1920-1930. Signed and titled in pencil. Soft Ground Etching in Colors on Cream Paper. Plate: 17 in. by 8 in., matted and framed 25 in. by 17 in. (Cond: good, spotted stain to paper (?) in 3 areas)

Max Pollak, painter and printmaker, was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1886, but his family soon moved to Vienna, Austria. At the age of sixteen, Pollack was admitted to the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied painting and printmaking with William Unger and Ferdinand Schmutzer. Upon the completion of his studies in 1910, Pollak entered and won the Prix deRome for his etchings, a first for a printmaker. During the ‘Great War’ the artist was appointed the official painter of the Austrian Army. Upon completion of his studies, his early works reflect specifically, an artistic movement of the time known asthe Vienna Successionist. Pollack immigrated to the United States in 1927 where he lived in New York City
