Description
Pre-Columbian Moche Portrait Head of Dignitary Vessel from Peru, ca. 500-700 CE. Pottery head vessel having a stirrup type spout, depicting a dignitary wearing a horned headdress with side wing-like appendages. The mans face is painted with a star-like pattern. Similar horns can be found in Donnan, Moche Portraits, figure 5.26 and figure 8.14 and Hoyle, Mochicas, volume I, #199. Painted cream ground with red-brown painted decorative elements and highlights. Repaired from approximately six original pieces with restoration over the breaklines, spout repaired and reattached, headdress appendages and horns partially restored.Ex. Hirsch Auction 277, # 123, 02/06/2012. Ex. Dr. Ernst Fischer Collection, extensively exhibited. Ex. Sothebys 6420, # 198 (1 of 2 pieces), 1993. Early collection labels affixed on base. 10" in height.
