Campbell, Annie (American 1862-1951), Pittsburgh Aglow, circa 1915, pastel, 17.5 x 11 inches, signed A. Campbell lower left, this pastel is a study for The Westmoreland Museum of American Arts larger pastel drawing by Annie Campbell acquired in 1999, Annie Campbell was known as a pioneer in secondary school art education. She was born in West Virgina because her father had a job there. He had come to Dayton in 1847, was a chemist, and was working in West Virginia when Annie was born. After studying in Dayton, Ohio with Hugo Froelich and Otto Walter Beck during the 1890's, she instituted the first formal art classes at Steele High School. framed in a gilded wood drawing frame measuring 26.5 x 19.5 inches
From time to time, she left the city for advanced study with Rhoda Holmes Nicholls in Massachusetts and with the celebrated art teacher Arthur Wesley Dow in New York. A strong and sophisticated painter of landscape, flower, and figure pieces, she was also a vigorous supporter of the Dayton Art Institute.
