Description
Riding animals on a metal tricycle were first introduced in the 1896 Steiff catalog. With feet attached to the petals, the animals mimic a cycling movement when pulled along. A rabbit, cat, poodle and monkey were the first cyclists. When the toy was re-introduced by Steiff in 1912 after a ten year hiatus, the cycle had four wheels instead of three and the registered patented trademark "Record" was established. This concept was so successful that Steiff continued to produce animal cyclists into the 50's and 60's. This Niki Record Rabbit, circa 1951 is open mouthed with beige mohair and a pink stitched nose, glass eyes and wooden wheels. Approximately 12" tall, the happy "Hansi" boasts a Steiff button and yellow tag. Overall very fine.
