Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Northern Washington state to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Makah or Nootka tribe, ca. 1920s CE. A lovely hand-woven rain hat comprised of tight strips of reed and wood, with some dyed in brown, cream, pink, and purple hues. The hat is constructed with a broad conical profile, a top cap with a lengthy grassy tassel, and an interior woven cap into which one's head would fit and be guarded from rain drops hitting the overarching hat. Hats created in this region were worn by natives during any number of outdoor tasks, though they oftentimes represent the extensive trade network that existed prior to the age of exploratory expeditions between indigenous and American and European mariners.
