Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Mayan, Post-Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine ceramic whistle in the form of an adorable jaguar with huge front paws bearing enormous claws, a stocky body, a thick neck, and a large head replete with almond eyes, a wide snout, bared fangs, and a drooping tongue. Large cupped ears flank the mouth piece of the instrument which projects from behind the feline's head, and an opening below serves as the tone hole. When played, the whistle produces a lovely sound evocative of the ancient Maya. Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 3.625" L x 3.125" W x 3.875" H (9.2 cm x 7.9 cm x 9.8 cm); 4.625" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Restoration to majority of figure's right paw. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, fading to some finer features, small chips to back, paws, ears, face, and verso, with light roughness across most surfaces. Light earthen deposits throughout. Whistle is still playable and produces a nice sound when played.
