Description
General Philippe Regis de Trobriand (French, 1816-1897) "Cottage Landscape with Villagers and Livestock Near Stream", oil on canvas, 12" x 20", signed lower right "R. de Trobriand". Presented in a fine antique gilt and gesso exhibition frame. Note: Philippe Regis de Trobriand emigrated to the United States from France in 1841. After the start of the Civil War, he became a citizen of the United States and in 1861, he was given command of the 55th New York Regiment known as the Gardes Lafayette. Eventually, he served at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Potomac Campaign and witnessed Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox. He went on th become a brevet brigadier general in the regular army in 1867 for his gallant services during the war. He resided in New Orleans from 1875 where he later wrote of his time spent in the military. Trobriand died in Bayport, New York in 1897. Reference: Wikipedia and Son of the Morning Star, by Evan S.
