Description
  • Title: Antique Japanese Meiji Satsuma Low Bowl c.1890 Sgnd. Meizan
  • Origin: Japanese

Being offered for sale and/or discussion is this fine quality Japanese Meiji Satsuma low bowl signed Meizan, one of the fine Satsuma artists with the name of Meizan. Please notice photo 5 of lot 2261, the Yabu Meizan vase pair, which sold at Bonham's auction Sept. 26, 2014 sale #21786 for $21,250. Some similarities in the art work exist between this pair and the low bowl being offered. The figures on both, although a bit bigger in scale on the low bowl, have similar styles of expressions, coloring and clothing. Other similarities exist in both with the coloring, raised enamels and design of the exquisite flowers. The brocade work on the bowl is similar to Yabu Meizan's earlier pieces. I have seen this same type of work on other pieces, some signed with the circle and dot in the center which Louis Lawrence states in his recent book is Yabu's son, and some with the same shapes that Yabu used. If there is an interested viewer out there who would like to discuss this or share information, please feel free to contact me. Here is a chance to own a fine piece of Satsuma by Meizan, at a fraction of the cost of a Yabu Meizan. Perhaps, some day, a link may be established between these two Meizan artist, and that this bowl is actually an early Yabu Meizan. The raised white enamel(and some other raised enamel colors) is typical of Yabu Meizan and other top Satsuma artists. The little boys are gleefully playing their various musical instruments and having a great time! The motion in their body stances is felt. The expressions on their faces and the clothing details are superb. The floral border and brocade work are also excellent and found on pieces by Yabu Meizan. The artistic quality is on a par with the best pieces at a fraction of the cost. The shape of the oval bowl is unusual in that it cleverly steps down a couple of millimeters on either side of the rims in opposite directions. The crackle glaze is very fine, indicative of earlier pieces. No damages, chips, cracks, or restorations. There is some minor wear to gilding and faint darkening to center. None of this is objectionable or noticeable when displayed and does not detract from the beauty and fine quality of this lovely little low bowl. It could be possible that this bowl is an early Yabu Meizan. If there is another devotee out there that would like to discuss this mystery, please feel free to contact me.*See note below. Dimensions: 5 7/8" long x 4 3/4" long x 1 1/4" deep.
