Richard Byrnes 1851 Navy Colt SN. 72702. 7.5 in long .36 caliber octagonal barrel, signed on the top "Address Saml. Colt, New York City" in one line. The 6 shot cylinder with engraved ship battle scene, "Colts Patent" and serial number 72702, matching numbers on all parts including ramrod, barrel, trigger guard, grip, wedge, etc. The grip, strap and trigger have a silver plated finish with walnut grip inserts and engraved "Richard Byrnes". Colonel Byrnes was born in 1832 in Ireland, in 1864 he took command of the Union Army's 28th Massachusetts Volunteers Irish Brigade during the American Civil War, 2 weeks later he was fatally wounded during the attack on the entrenchments at Cold Harbor.
