Rare Collection of Six Assorted Portrait Miniatures
fourth quarter 18th/first quarter 19th century, each watercolor/gouache,
including: Etienne Charles Le Guay (French, 1762-1846), "Young Man in a Blue Coat", 1789, set into a red leather pocketbook with an 1820 calendar and lunar cycle in French, portrait signed and dated left edge, 1-1/2" x 1-1/8", wallet (closed) 5-7/8" x 3-3/8"; (Attr.) James Peale (American, 1749-1831), "Gentleman in Beige Coat, Probably a Member of the Kutz/Coots Family of Kutztown, Pennsylvania", unsigned, handwritten label on frame backing with artist and sitter attribution and provenance, sight 1-3/4" x 1-1/4", glazed locket set in giltwood frame with red velvet surround, 5" x 3-3/4"; "Portrait of John Ruskin (1819-1900)", in an ebonized frame with sitter's name and dates carved/stippled on reverse, dia. 1-1/8", overall dia. 4"; "Lady in a Bonnet and Shawl", signed "T. Perrin" lower left, in a small brass frame with stand, overall 3" x 2-1/8"; and two "Portraits of English Gentlemen in Olive Green and Gray Double-Breasted Coats", both glazed in pendants plated in rolled gold, overall dia. 2" and 1-3/4" x 1-1/2", respectively.
All together in a wood and glass presentation case, 12-3/4" x 12-3/4"
