Joseph Pennell (American, 1860-1926). "The West Front, Rouen." 1907. Etching. Signed in pencil. A stunning etching of the western façade of Rouen Cathedral in Normandy, France created by beloved American artist Joseph Pennell. Pennell was an etcher, lithographer, illustrator and author. He is one of the best known and respected American artists from the etching revival period. A wonderful image of this famous Gothic cathedral, a work of sacred architecture paid homage to by several artists, the most famous perhaps being Impressionist Claude Monet who created a series of this cathedral at different times of day under different climactic conditions. Size: image measures 10.875" L x 8.5" W (27.6 cm x 21.6 cm); sheet measures 13" L x 9.25" W (33 cm x 23.5 cm); 19.25" L x 14.25" W (48.9 cm x 36.2 cm) in matt/portfolio
Born in Philadelphia, Pennell trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art, and later he taught at the National Academy and the Art Students League in New York City. From 1883, Pennell spent most of his time in Europe, until 1917 when he moved back permanently to the United States. Over his distinguished and prolific career, he won many medals and awards in the United States and in Europe, and is considered one of the great etching innovators of the time. Among his achievements, Pennell illustrated and authored many books, contributed to leading magazines, and was one of the founders of the Philadelphia Society of Etchers.
