Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A mold-made blackware vessel depicting a seated figure - perhaps a shaman or lord - donning a high cylindrical headdress that is wrapped with a decorative band featuring repeated triangular motifs, a large pectoral with matching triangular motifs, and a dotted garment or animal skin over his chest and torso. Clinging to his shoulders are a pair of monkeys. Monkeys have always fascinated humankind, with their zany antics that seem to mirror and, at times, parody humans. Understanding simian creatures as mimics of human culture, most ancients of the Americas regarded the monkey as a mediary between man and the supernatural. A lovely blackware vessel from ancient Peru, impressive for its artistry, technical prowess, and intriguing iconography! Size: 6.75" H (17.1 cm)
Provenance: private H. Berk collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
