Description
**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East, probably Egypt, Mamluk, ca. 11th to 12th century CE. A beautiful free-blown, opaque glass unguentarium of a stunning cobalt blue hue with a petite base and rough pontil scar, a four-sided body with three uneven indentations, a rolled shoulder, a gradually-flaring neck, and a thin rim. The perfume-storing vessel boasts several areas of the original white marvered tool marks; however, much has worn away. What has replaced the marvered patterns, however, are absolutely breathtaking areas of fiery rainbow-hued iridescence which accentuate the exterior in a palette of amethyst, emerald, citrine, ruby, and topaz colors. A magnificent example! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 1.1" W x 4.125" H (2.8 cm x 10.5 cm); 4.725" H (12 cm) on included custom stand.

A stylistically-similar example of a red-and-white color scheme hammered for GBP 24,500 ($32,194.47) at Christie's, London "Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds" Auction (sale 7571, April 8, 2008, lot 86): https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/a-mamluk-marvered-opaque-red-and-white-5057472-details.aspx?from=searchresults&intObjectID=5057472&sid=e06e9bb7-42b0-4939-ab0a-5c9e8f5f44cd
