Description
Dutch silver tea caddy, c.1900. 7" high. The faux 18th century Dutch silver marks indicate that it is probably Hanau,Germany. The city fathers of Hanau, trying to increase revenue in the town, allowed silversmiths to make copies of 15th, 16th and 17th and 18th century Dutch silver items, with faux 18th century Dutch silver marks, to sell to tourists. It created alot of confusion years later as dealers were constantly identifying 19th and 20th century Hanau silver pieces as 18th century Dutch.
