Portrait of 18th century American, c.1780-1850. It appears to be a very fine 18th or 19th century portrait of an American 18th century gentleman or important figure, circa 1780. The hair, clothes and design of the painting all echo the early New England portraits of upper class merchants or politicians. The canvas appears to be early to mid 19th century, very thin, and the paint on the canvas is very thin, as if painted with a camel hair brush.Apparently unsigned. The painting without the frame is 22" x 28".

There appears to be an area of restoration, upper right hand corner, about 2 inches long. Otherwise good condition, minor depressions in the canvas, old patches on the back.
