Item Details
Description
Greece, Islands of Thrace, Thasos, ca. 500 to 463 BCE. AR stater. Satyr advancing right, carrying protesting nymph, Quadripartite incuse square left Rider, Thasiennes 5; SNG Copenhagen 1010-1. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm); 8.79 grams.

The island of Thasos was famous for its precious metal mines, attracting the Phoenicians and then the Greeks, who formed a colony there at Paros. The coins from this colony are known as some of the most distinctive and interesting of the late Archaic and early Classical periods, of which this is a fine example. The satyr abducting the nymph is a unique choice for a coin motif, although the artistry of it recalls the head of the nymph found on coins from Neapolis (Macedon).
