Antique turn of the 18th Century Italian painted opera theater backdrop. Circa Estimated 1790. Depicts a wall adorned with drapery and floral vases for use as a backdrop for opera productions. No apparent markings or signature. This work is comprised of four panels with pairs of panels connected by hinges. Overall approximate size measurements 116" Tall x 188" Length. Fair overall condition, having age related wear, numerous holes in wood protruding nails. Each exhibits numerous signs of use in productions as evidenced by the numerous repairs and paint layers. From a prominent Palm Beach estate, previous owner relayed attribution of origination & value; La Scala Opera House, Milan Italy. Original paid $40,000.USD at public auction. La Scala, Piazza della Scala, Milan Italy. Capacity 2,030, Opened 1778, Architect Giuseppe Piermarini. Official name Teatro alla Scala. The theatre was inaugurated on 3 August 1778 and was originally known as the Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala. The premiere performance was Antonio Salieri's Europa riconosciuta.
