Description
Maynard Dixon (American, 1875-1946) Attributed: Southwest Town Scene with Church. Oil with pencil indications on canvas, initialed and dated lower right, 1942. Framed.
After spending his youth on a ranch in Fresno, California , Maynard Dixon headed east to document the landscapes and inhabitants of the deserts of Utah, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, and Arizona. Although he began painting in an impressionistic style, Dixon ultimately felt that it he was doing his subject matter a disservice by depicting it in this manner and, around 1915, began taking a thoroughly modern approach- where all the natural forms were distilled to their essences and complemented by bold colors- to his painting. This quickly became his trademark style and gained him admission to the prestigious Taos Society of Artists.
While much of his oeuvre is devoted to documenting the vastness of the unspoiled west in great detail, this work instead offers a view of a Spanish colonial streetscape. Each component, from the mission-style church anchoring the street to the mass of contorted tree trunks, is simplified and emphasizes the mysterious air of the scene.
Dimensions: 30 x 20": 34.5 x 24.5" (framed)
