Description
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze ring with shank widening to the angled shoulder; flat bezel set with green stone intaglio engraved with the image of the Gnostic deity Abrasax, depicted with the head of a cockerel, wearing cuirass and holding a shield and whip, legs in the form of serpents; to the side the Greek letters IAW. 7.24 grams, 24.86mm overall, 19.85 x 14.73mm internal diameter (approximate size British H, USA 4, Europe 6.18, Japan 6) (1"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980.
