Description
Archive of material related to Eliza Stokes and the S.S. La Plata. The crew aboard the steamship La Plata were stricken with yellow fever upon their return from the West Indies. 23 died, including the surgeon. Mrs. Eliza Stokes was a stewardess who tended to the sick on their difficult return voyage to Southampton from St. Thomas. Included in the lot are: A folio containing several items mounted on leaves including a newspaper clipping, manuscript letters of thanks to Mrs. Stokes, and a List of Contributions "as a mark of gratitude to Mrs. Stokes... from the Officers, Engineers and Crew...."; one MS letter to Mrs. Stokes from her daughter; 2 boards with mounted photos of the Stokes.
