Pre-Columbian, Maya territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built bichrome pottery cylinder vase on small tripod feet, its exterior walls decorated with red cinnabar incised iconography on a grey ground. A figural lid, with the head of a fierce transformative anthropomorphic / zoomorphic creature in a flaring feathered headdress and huge spooled earrings that forms the handle, and fits neatly onto the piece. The body of the piece and the non-handle sections of the lid are covered in incised iconography. This is abstract and glyph-like around the rim, lower part of the body, and lid. Around the center exterior of the body is a ring of more elaborate images, including a repeated winged monster figure, possibly representing the god Kukulkan (Quetzalcoatl). Size with lid: 5" W x 7.5" H (12.7 cm x 19 cm)

Both lid and base are repaired from multiple pieces; repairs, especially on the base, are well done and difficult to see. Nicely preserved motifs and some of the original cinnabar pigment remains as well.
