Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Republican Period, ca. middle of 2nd to middle of 1st century BCE. Two hand-made terracotta transport amphora handles from a Dressel Type I amphora, each with a stamped planta pedis (maker's mark). The shorter handle has a stamped large-petaled flower inside of concentric circles, and the other reads "YOIYTAZ" before terminating at a loss. The Dressel Type I was the most common type of late Republican Roman amphorae, produced mostly along the Tyrrhenian coastline from Etruria to Campania; they are found throughout the western Mediterranean, including modern-day France and Spain. They were used almost exclusively for carrying wine. Size of largest: 4.625" H (11.7 cm).
Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980

Both items have age-commensurate surface wear, minor chips and losses around peripheries, fading to stamped maker's marks, with light earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
