Charles Coleman (1807-1874 was a British painter and printmaker who lived and worked in Rome. Dismissive of academic teaching, he believed that observation from nature was the best education, hence the subtitle to this collection: "Designed from Nature and Etched by C. Coleman". Credited with founding the "Campagna Romana" school of painting in Italy. A few newspaper clippings laid in.
Condition
Binding worn, spine ends bumped, corners fraying; several plates affected by bump to spine head; foxing in plate margins and on interleaved tissue, a few of which are not present; about very good.
