Description
THE IMPERIAL PALACE was constructed by the first Tokagawa shogun, Ieyasu, in 1590 during the Edo period. It was the world's largest castle when built but now only the inner circle remains. The Imperial family lives in the western part of the grounds that are only open to the public twice a year, on the New Year and the Emperor's birthday. The Imperial Palace is surrounded by a moat and high walls covered in trees and gardens. Several gates follow the moats and open into public gardens that surround the Palace. The official entrance to the Imperial Palace is the Ote-mon Gate.
