Description
Doulton Lambeth decorated by Eliza Simmance, Lidded Jug with sterling silver lid, 9.25 inches tall, Although rather over-shadowed in Nineteenth Century by the Barlow sisters Miss Simmance later became more and more recognized as an original and versatile designer and decorator, specially of the Doulton Wares and Silicon Wares. Her work during more than half a century because of its variety and volume, has great attractions for the present day collectors. She practiced most of the decorating techniques in vogue at the Lambeth Pottery and often combined two or three of these on the same pot – incising through colored slips, carving, perforating, applied relief figuring, bold modeling, etc. Her finely incised and pate sur pate decoration is particularly attractive. Like her colleague, Frank Buttler, she was very much alive to changing trends in the art world and some of her designs in the Art Nouveau manner are outstandingly attractive. She won many high awards at international exhibitions. Provenance: Boca Raton Museum of Art
