Description
Central Europe (Germany, Austria), Danube River Basin, ca. 8th to 6th century BCE. A wonderful bronze bracelet with a loosely-coiled form. Made by bending a long, rounded bronze strip, the tight spiral form was a markedly popular style of late Bronze Age and Iron Age Europe. This example has incised lines at its narrowest end, giving it the appearance of a serpent's skin. Often buried with elite women, bracelets like this were symbolic of the status of the deceased and are common finds in dig sites across Central Europe. Size: 4.25" W x 6.9" H (10.8 cm x 17.5 cm)
During the late Bronze Age, Central European people lived in small groups, probably loosely confederated for trading purposes but engaging in frequent warfare. Women and men ornamented themselves with a variety of gorgeous bronze items - huge spiral-shaped brooches at each shoulder, a variety of bronze necklaces and torcs, bronze weapons, etc.
Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection; ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York, New York, USA; ex-Sotheby's London, November 6, 1977, lot 312
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
