We all know what happened after that, within a relatively short time.The Kinetoscope, as it was called, enabled the human eye (and brain) to be fooled to thinking that a series of sequential pictures could appear to be in continuous motion, due to the ingenious "flicker advance" built into the hand-wound film mechanism. This mechanism, with it's original crank, is in perfect condition and advances the film as designed onto the take-up reel. The original Bausch & Lomb projecting lens is present (made especially for Edison).The projecting light was provided by an electrically powered carbon-arc module in the box at the rear, and sent through the central lens to the film mechanism. Due to the inherent dangers, smoke and other factors, this machine was subsequently "upgraded" to a powerful light bulb system, requiring about 300 watts to effectively operate. The carbon-arc elements can be easily obtained if one wanted to replace the bulb with the original system.There is a wooden slide projection card, in which one can insert "magic lantern" type slides, for projection onto the screen as a still picture. This was intended to be the introductory for various films or lessons to be demonstrated. The slide card provided is an exact copy of one of the originals, which easily broke due to their delicate nature and usage. Two old picture slides will be provided as well.The entire assemblage is attached to a wooden plank with legs. It can be easily disassembled for carriage, as indeed it was during the period of time it was used for traveling exhibitions.Acquired from the personal collection of one of the world's leading collectors of all things Edison, who would often use this very machine to show interested children of all ages how things began, way back when. He did replace a few parts here and there (some screws, retaining bolts, etc.) but the entirety is highly original and FUNCTIONAL.
