A Very rare, old and interesting wooden "Phemba" or maternity sculpture from the Yombe peoples of the Congo, Central Africa. This is a well weathered vintage to antique example of a Phemba, also known as Yombe maternity figures, the name refers to sculptural objects that depict the figures of a mother and child. Phemba are iconic examples of Kongo art and reflect the degree to which women are treasured in Kongo culture, not just for their fecundity, but as seers and guardians of the spirit. Kongo societies trace their descent through the female line of ancestors. Of note* This region was converted to christianity several hundred years ago, however animist beliefs intertwined with christian ideals to create a unique tradition. Please note the small child in the mother's lap appears to be praying.A rare and desirable example. Completely original untouched patina. Measures 14.25 inches tall.
