11 lines on Shaw's Ayot St. stationery, signed with initials to C.K. Ogden, dated 23rd May, 1911.
At time of writing Charles Kay Ogden (1889-1957) was an undergraduate at Cambridge University and co-founder in 1909 of the Heretic's Society. This note is in reference to Shaw's upcoming lecture to the Society on Monday, May 29. The subject of the talk given was "The Religion of the Future." Some months later G.K. Chesterton made a well-publicized rebuttal to Shaw at the Society. Ogden is now remembered as a polymath; linguist, philosopher, writer, eccentric. He is known as the inventor of "Basic English"—a language system utilizing a simplified grammar and limited vocabulary that he promoted as a universal language that could help bring about world peace.
