Description
An original Russian photograph of a dance class at the Smolnyi Institute for Noble Maidens (Институт благородных девиц), Karl Bulla, St. Petersburg, circa 1901. Catherine II founded the Smolnyi Institute in 1764 on the basis of a proposal by Ivan Betskoi, the Empress' main advisor on education and President of the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1764 to 1794. It was Russia's first educational establishment for women and continued to function under the personal patronage of the Russian Empresses until just before the 1917 revolution. (Note the large portraits of the empresses on the back wall).
