Description
A choice section of Roman lead water pipe, c. 1st - 2nd Century AD, with raised inscription EX OFICINA M AEMILI SVCES, with an apluster to right, reading 'From the Workshop of M. Aemilius Suces'. Well-preserved and formed by thick sheet lead which if then rolled and soldered to form a tube. Lead pipes were used from about 200 BC to around AD 250 and were a potentially huge problem, even considering most had a lime build-up inside them from the high lime content in most Roman water. L: 19 3/4 x 3 5/8 x 2 3/4 in (50.1 x 9.2 x 7 cm). With oxide and earthen patination. A seldomly offered Roman artifact from everyday life! Ex Orange County private collection.
