Description
Antique 19th C. Penny-Farthing Bicycle. Victorian era. Standard Columbia by Pope Manufacturing. The name comes from the British pennies and farthings, one being greater in size than the other. Its popularity made it a symbol of the Victorian era. Made mostly of cast iron with a leather seat and lined wheels. It is the first machine to be called a bicycle. Popular in the late 1800's, this one was made probably about 1882. 59 inches tall by 6 feet long. From a New Canaan, Connecticut estate.
