Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, probably later in the period, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A charming vessel in the form of a two-headed owl with a bulbous, rounded form and four legs and two wings between them. The wings are painted onto the sides of the body. A tall, cylindrical spout that flares slightly outward at the mouth rises from the center of the body, while a curved loop handle is attached at the center of the spout and back of the body. Size: 4.45" W x 7.4" H (11.3 cm x 18.8 cm)
The owl is frequently associated in South American iconography with the underworld, death, and shamanism. Ancient Peruvians seem to have had a particular affinity for the animal, depicting multiple species, including the barn owl, typical owl, burrowing owl, and spectacle owl. They accompany gods, warriors, sacrifices, and shamans.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
Provenance: private Madrone collection, Hawaii, USA
