Description
Ancient Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 305 to 30 BCE. A fine gesso-lined wooden sarcophagus fragment illustrating the god Horus, the falcon-headed brother of Osiris and one of the most significant and powerful deities in Egyptian mythos. He is depicted standing in mummiform with a red-painted body decorated with dozens of intersecting diagonal stripes, and holding a lengthy staff with a forked bottom end with green-brown hands indicative of being deceased. The deity has a characteristic avian-style head and wears a tri-color wig topped with a feathered crown of Upper Egypt with a frontal uraeus. The figure is painted in red, blue, black, and green-brown hues atop a faded yellow ground, with a segmented vertical bar behind and a red and black bar on top. A beautiful example from ancient Egypt! Displayed within three acrylic arms on a burlap-lined wooden frame. Size (fragment): 5.375" W x 13.5" H (13.7 cm x 34.3 cm); size (frame): 16.5" W x 20.375" H (41.9 cm x 51.8 cm).
