Description
PrintsWashington & The Declaration of American Independence

c. 1800 Print of George Washington & The Declaration of Independence, Engraved by Edward Savage, Published by I. Le Petit, London, England, Choice Extremely Fine.
Uncolored print by Savage, with a head modeled after Stuart’s portrait, measures 17.5” x 13.75” and is trimmed to the image. Matted to an overall size of 24” x 19,” the print being hinged on the reverse by two old archival fiber hinges at the top and bottom left edge. Bold and clean with excellent presentation, one trivial superficial crease in the upper right corner. Savage (1761-1815) was one of the most famous engravers of his time who did many lithographs of Washington during the time. Washington is seen here standing with his right hand guarding the “Declaration of American Independence”, with his left hand thrust into his breeches pocket. In his sitting room, Washington stands between a desk and a chair, which is holding his sword. In the background you can see the ocean and a sunrise in the distance. A beautiful, extremely rare representation of Washington at his finest. Hart 677.
