Description
BRUCE CRANE (AMERICAN, 1857-1937) TONALIST LANDSCAPE, oil on canvas, a fine depiction of a country road in an autumnal landscape, title identified as "Passing Shower" on plaque attached to frame, signed lower right, on likely original stretchers. Housed in a modern gilt frame. Circa 1890. 12" x 16" sight, 16" x 20 1/4" OA.
Painting in very good visual condition with minor surface loss lower right. Frame with minor wear.
Provenance: Property from the estate of Spencer Kellogg Neale, Gordonsville, VA.
Descended in the Kellogg family of "Lockhaven", Buffalo, NY.
Catalogue Note: Born in New York City, landscape painter Bruce Crane (1857-1937) studied with Alexander Hewlig Wyant (1836-1892) and at the Art Students League before venturing to France to continue his training. Recognized as an important landscape painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Crane's signature style blends elements of Tonalism and Impressionism in an effort to convey a specific atmospheric effect. The present work, completely untouched and fresh to the market, does just that.
