AMERICAN FEDERAL GILTWOOD THREE-SECTION OVERMANTLE MIRROR, projecting cornice surmounted with central spread-wing eagle flanked by full-body eagles, above a horizontal-reeded frieze with central double-swag ornament, and three original mirror plates flanked by spiral columns. Old regilded surface. Together with a studio photo of mirror and an old photo showing mirror in the Coolidge residence. Three pieces total. Second quarter 19th century. Regilded in Boston around 1950. 39" HOA, 65 3/4" WOA.
Excellent condition with a few small detached, but present elements, minor flaking to eagles.
Provenance: Descended in the family of Senator Marcus Allen Coolidge, Fitchburg, MA.
Purchased by Coolidge in Boston around 1925.
Catalogue Note: Marcus Allen Coolidge (1865-1947) was a Democratic United States Senator representing Massachusetts from March 4, 1931 to January 3, 1937. In 1916, Coolidge was elected mayor of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Coolidge as special envoy to Poland to represent the Peace Commission. He became chairman of the Democratic state convention in 1920.
