Description
OHIO MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, "3" gallon capacity, slightly ovoid form with beaded shoulder ring, arched handles, and flat-top rounded rim, Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "John Bergundthal / Powhatan / Ohio", additional brushed cobalt scrolling vine, stripes, dashes, and wavy line. Circa 1875. 14 1/2" H, 8" D rim.
Poor repair to 2" chip to rear rim, very light exterior-only hairline to rear body, otherwise undamaged.
Catalogue Note: John Bergundthal (1828-1896) was recorded as a merchant in 1860, appointed postmaster of Powhatan in 1865, and listed as a grocer in 1872. This jar likely dates to his grocer period.
