Color lithograph-poster, 2nd State, framed
31 x 23 ½ inches (without frame), backed sheet
Signed with stamp and dated “95” lower left
Provenance: R .S. Johnson Fine Art, (Chicago), 1977
References: Delteil 356 II/II; Adhemar 149 II/II; Wittrock P17 B (of C). (Both Delteil and Adhemar indicate a 1st state with the addition of a “dancing figure” lower right. They also both indicate a 2nd state without the figure, which state is in an edition of 100 and is the state of the subject property).
Narrative: This Art Nouveau poster of performer May Milton was intended for her American dance tour but once she left Paris for New York the tour apparently never materialized and she was never seen nor heard from again. Some say it was because she was short on talent and beauty. Regardless, the collectability of posters in the 1890’s was so popular that a copy of May Milton can be seen in Picasso's 1901 painting “The Blue Room”.
Condition: The subject property is in good condition. The colors are vibrant and rich, particularly the striking blue tone, and shows no signs of fading. There are a few, minor signs of wear, however these are considered age-related damage and are consistent with paper that is over one hundred years old, such as light damage and mild staining. In addition, there are some small tears in the corner, lower right. Finally, the entire sheet is backed. In response to an inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the May Milton color lithograph described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice. Notwithstanding this report or any discussions concerning the May Milton, this and all lots are offered and sold “as is”.
