June 1, 1782-Dated Revolutionary War Period, The State of Connecticut Treasurer’s Paylist for 162 Officers & Soldiers of the Connecticut Line, Choice Extremely Fine.
A rarely encountered original Handwritten, Revolutionary War Period Paylist for the State of Connecticut, 4 pages with 1 (face page) written, measuring 16” x 12.5”, on clean fresh laid watermarked period paper. The wonderful Watermark is in the design of a Church Bell and the word “Hartford”. The bold header text at top reads: “The State of Connecticut Paid by the Treasurer the Principal Sum on 162 Officers & Soldiers that was payable 1st June 1782.” Initialed at upper right. Below the header are five perfectly organized Columns with each entry numbered by soldier’s bundle of pay, and paid amount listed. Totaled at end of list, “2028” pounds, “13” shillings and “3 1/2” pence. Docket on the blank reverse of the final page reads, in full: “Bill of Parcels and Inst. (Instructions) on Bundle No, 6 -” Apparently this financial accounting document was produced by the Treasurer of the State to confirm each individual of the “162 Officers & Soldiers” Paylist amounts were properly “bundled” and distributed. John Lawrence (1719-1802) served as Connecticut State Treasurer from 1769 to 1789. This listing and Document is boldly written in easy to read deep rich brown ink and denominated in Pounds, Shillings and Pence, payable June 1, 1782. Overall, bright clean and attractive making it excellent for display. Rare.
