Item Details
Description
A 19th century Northwest Coast ceremonial polychrome wood rattle length 14 1/2 in. This rattle represents a mythological raven in flight, supporting a reclining shaman figure with his outstretched tongue. This rattle was given to Dr. Robert E. Henning around 1899 by a Shaman from the Tlingit tribe. Dr. Henning was appointed by the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions to establish a Hospital in Sitka, Alaska in 1888. During his work at the hospital, he embraced the people of the Tlingit tribe. He was such a welcome addition to the tribe that upon his departure, the Shaman gave him a raven rattle as a token of their appreciation.
It has been displayed in a glass case for generations. It is in very good condition. Provenance: Robert Stone (Great Grandson of Robert E. Henning). An article was written in the HOME MISSION MONTHLY Published by the Women’s Executive Committee of home missions of the Presbyterian Church, June 1888. Taken from the article, "Dr. Robert E. Henning goes to Alaska by appointment of the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions. The work of establishing a hospital in Sitka, Alaska has been followed with interest by many, and it is a matter of much satisfaction to be able to announce that not only is the hospital ready for occupancy, but that the missionary physician has been appointed, and is on his way to take charge. He is scheduled to arrive Sitka, Alaska, May 12, 1888."
