This unique model was the first Da Vinci to be added as a flying Tourbillon. The "Quattro Statigioni" (four seasons) was produced between 1999 & 2000 in a Limited Edition run of 20 pieces.
The first Da Vinci was introduced by IWC in 1970, later followed by the perpetual calendar in 1985; the first watch with a display that shows the year in four digits. A year later, IWC created the first watch made with a ceramic zirconium oxide case through their Da Vinci line. In 1995 the Da Vinci perpetual chronograph was introduced with a rattrapante and in 1999 with a Tourbillon as seen in this watch.
This IWC up for auction is considered to be the most complicated timepieces ever created by IWC alongside the Grande Complication, Destriero & Sidérale Scafusia.
The 18K yellow gold dial was hand engraved by renowned engraver Wolfgang Siegwart, displaying four allegorical figures each representing a season of the year. The four sprite-like figures represent the cyclical death, birth, blossoming and gathering of the harvest.
The figure at one o'clock is Ceres representing summer, by holding a bundle of wheat and a sickle. The figure at four o'clock is a Bacchante representing autumn and the success of the harvest, holding grapes and a wine glass. The figure at seven o'clock is Hestia representing winter, attending to the hearth by toiling over a hot stove. The final figure at ten o'clock is Flora representing spring, holding a cornucopia of blossoming flowers.
